Official Opening Day - Sunday, 8^th June 2025

Through the recent pandemic we noticed that community spirit had grown with people coming together to help and support each other. We wanted to build on that spirit where community engagement could be maintained, strengthened and taken forward. People's awareness of the importance and benefits of being in nature, gardening, observing and protecting wildlife had grown significantly during that difficult time. The idea for the Community Garden was born.

There is no such facility in our area and it is the only project that touches every part of our community, from young and old, able and disabled, enabling everyone to share the same creative space, learn from one another and form positive bonds. As well as growing produce it will provide a space in nature to learn about where food comes from, horticulture, pollination, the impact of climate and the environment and how to encourage and protect wildlife.

It is now widely known that spending time in a green space, doing a bit of gardening, or just observing nature, has huge benefits to physical & mental health and wellbeing for everyone from children to our older generation.

The NHS via Social Prescribing refers people to Community Gardening/Green Spaces to relieve symptoms of stress/anxiety/depression/loneliness and we are proud to have the support of our own Coastal Medical Partnership.

The Community Garden will also provide our young people who perhaps struggle with academic studies to find a new career path working in horticulture, the environment and much needed heritage skills and we are also proud that the Arnewood School in New Milton will be an active partner.

The Community Garden is situated at Fawcetts Field in New Milton, next to Moore Close. Our Trustees are: Angela Jackson, Steve Sinyard & Alan Watson.

We would like to thank and acknowledge the following organisations who have funded and supported our project so far:

New Milton Residents' Association, New Milton Town Council, The Barker Mills Foundation, the Charles Burnett Memorial Fund, the National Garden Scheme, the National Lottery Awards for All, New Milton Sand & Ballast, Colten Care, Hampshire County Council, New Forest District Council, Hampshire & IOW Community Fund, the Woodland Trust, and individuals who have pledged to sponsor trees and seating at the garden.

We are pleased to say that local people are now volunteering to help with work on the garden, maintaining it and to make it a special place for everyone to enjoy.

Please get in touch with us if you can offer some of your time, no matter how much or how little, to help with this important community project. We are seeking two new Trustees to help take us forward, and more team members. It's not just about gardening and planting - can you help with a bit of admin or publicity or teaching or just be on site to oversee group events?
